Since 2011, sonically significant sites on the Fleurieu Peninsula have been sought out and documented. Although the sound map began in earnest as a field recording project, simply documenting sites across the Fleurieu, in recent years, the sound map has placed a greater emphasis on aspects of acoustic ecology and monitoring the biodiversity of given sites over yearly cycles. In 2020, the scope of the project was expanded to include Kangaroo Island. Sites that are selected for inclusion in the map are evaluated upon a criterion of biophonic, geographic, phenomenological, aesthetic and historical attributes.
